    HEALTH EDUCATION
    1.25 Credits
    Grade 9
    This unit of study will include such topics as:
    1. Exploring prevention and wellness concepts
    2. Learning the hazards of smoking, drugs, and alcohol as they relate to an individual’s level of health and wellness
    3. Understanding and identifying important aspects of fitness and nutrition
    4. Dealing with issues pertaining to teen sex, reproduction and STD prevention
    5. Goal setting and decision-making strategies

    Grade 10
    This unit of study will consist of Driver Education which includes:
    1. Studying and learning rules and regulations of the State of New Jersey, which pertain to the Motor Vehicle Commission
    2. Teaching students a positive and responsible attitude towards driving
    3. Administering the NJ State Driver’s Exam
    4. Explaining the Graduated Driver’s License Program pertaining to the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission
    5. Informing students about the Organ Donor Law, and the N.J. Hero Act, that was passed on July 22, 2008

    Grade 11
    This unit of study will include such topics as:
    1. Understanding safety awareness and injury prevention
    2. Applying First Aid: students will have a practical understanding of the procedures and techniques included in first aid, choking, emergencies, lifesaving CPR steps and the use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
    3. Offering opportunity to be certified in lifesaving techniques
    4. Discussing and teaching the dangers associated with alcohol and drug abuse

    Grade 12
    This unit of study will include such topics as:
    1. Human sexuality, which includes such ideas as healthy relationships, family structures, and a physical understanding of the human reproductive system
    2. Pregnancy, childbirth, contraception, and abstinence
    3. Prevention of sexually transmitted diseases
    4. Recognition of child/sexual abuse/domestic violence
    5. Review of current health issues 6. Dating Violence

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION

    Grades 9-12
    Students are required to successfully complete a program of Physical / Health Education for each year of high school attendance. The Physical Education program is co-educational. Grouped by grade level, every effort will be made to give students several choices of activities based on the time of year, availability of facilities, equipment, and class sizes. Fundamental skills and team concepts are emphasized pertaining to each individual activity. Through competitive activity these students will develop an appreciation for fitness and exercise as well as learn how to interact cooperatively and successfully with each other.

    Students are evaluated on preparedness, application, and scores from skill and written tests. Medically excused students will be excused from the physical portion of each activity, but they will need to complete alternative assignments to satisfy the objectives of the course.

    Each student’s fitness level will be evaluated each marking period using current standardized physical fitness tests. Students will be able to compare their fitness level to national standards and do a critique of their own fitness levels to be able to develop their own personal fitness plan.

    Project Adventure activities are designed to improve one’s self-concept, improve the ability to evaluate risks, and to improve the ability of group members to cooperate using cooperative and/or problem-solving games. Students will participate in cooperative games, problem solving initiatives, trust building activities, and low and high ropes course challenge events.

    ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
    3.75 Credits
    Grades 9-12
    Students with disabilities or those who may not participate successfully in a regular physical education program can successfully thrive in a movement program designed to meet the individual needs of the students. Students are required to successfully complete a program of Physical Education for each year of attendance. Individualized instruction on the development of fitness, fundamental motor skills and motor skills for individual and group games / activities is the focus of instruction. Class procedures and activities are modified to facilitate student participation. Students will develop an appreciation for fitness and exercise as well as learn how to interact cooperatively and successfully with each other.
    Note: If a student remains in this class for Health, they will receive an additional 1.25 credits.
