Letter from Superintendent Mr. Bracken Healy
1 November 2021

Dear Passaic Valley School Community,

It is with deep regret that I inform you about a recent loss to our school community. On Monday, November 1, 2021, John Howard passed away peacefully after complications from surgery following a heart attack. This loss will create an overwhelming amount of emotions for our students and staff, as well as PV alumni who were fortunate enough to have Mr. Howard as their teacher.

Mr. Howard began his career at Passaic Valley Regional High School in 2006 as a Science Teacher. In addition to teaching, Mr. Howard also served as a Fencing Coach and Chess Club advisor. He genuinely cared about his students and had an uncanny sense of humor that created a positive classroom environment for all that he taught. Today we lost a passionate educator, a great man and a friend to all.

We are currently working with the Traumatic Loss Coalition and their Crisis Response Team to help provide support services to our students, staff and community members during this difficult time. Passaic Valley Regional High School will have grief counselors available in-person this Wednesday, November 3 from 1:30-4:30pm and Friday, November 5 from 9-12pm for anyone interested.

We have also partnered with West Bergen Mental Health Services who will provide virtual grief counseling sessions free of charge for any student, staff or community member. Information for these sessions will be forthcoming.

We are saddened by this loss, and we will remain committed to ensuring our students and staff receive the mental and emotional support they need to cope with this tragic event. Please contact me at HealyB@pvrhs.org or our Student Assistance Counselor, Ms. Kelly Morris at MorrisK@pvrhs.org should you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Bracken Healy

Superintendent
