Passaic Valley Regional High School Narrative

  • The effectiveness of any school can be measured in many different ways. Student academic performance remains the single most important element in determining the quality of any secondary level institution. However, the high school culture is also heavily influenced by specialty programming and the breadth of co-curricular activities.

    Instructional Programming Highlights

    • Passaic Valley has Advanced Placement offerings in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus English, United States History, Spanish, Italian, Studio Art 3-D, American Government, European History and Environmental Science.
    • There are Honors offerings in Anatomy and Physiology, English, United States History, World History, Algebra Il, Pre-Calculus, Geometry, Italian, French, Spanish, Business Practice Firm, Biology and Chemistry.
    • Passaic Valley participates in the Fairleigh Dickinson University Middle College Program where students can receive college credits for selected courses taken at the high school level.
    • Passaic Valley Regional High School is part of the William Paterson University Professional Development Network. Teachers and administrators receive professional development opportunities and students participate in special events.
    • PVTV Broadcasting offerings are available for students interested in pursuing television communication opportunities.
    • Faculty members participate in the Montclair State University Network Educational Renewal which provides extensive professional development and educational research opportunities.
    • Passaic Valley has four (board approved) security officers who work both day and night shifts securing the school and keeping students safe. Little Falls, Totowa and Woodland Park police officers are present during the school day and Little Falls police officers complete walk throughs during the day as part of their community police work. 
    • We are now offering a Criminal Justice/Intro to Law course.
    • Home instruction services have been expanded into the digital world through a company called EDUCERE. 
    • A number of our students participate in the Morris County Technical School program offerings in the half-day program.
    • The Peer Helpers initiative involves junior and senior students meeting with ninth graders and providing guidance and support with adjustment to the high school experience.
    • The art, theatre arts and music courses provide students with a number of avenues to develop their performing arts interests.
    • Web Design, robotics and many other computer applications offerings are available.
    • Senior Internships allow 12th Grade students to pursue a career interest by working in their particular field of interest.
    • The Contemporary Issues Through Video-Conferencing is an award winning and internationally recognized course that allows students to communicate directly with their peers around the world as they discuss major political, economic, cultural and environmental issues.
    • Passaic Valley has been honored with several prestigious national "Magna Award" and NJSBA "School Leader Award" recognitions for its creative instructional practices.
    • Passaic Valley offers an in-house SAT preparation program for its students sponsored by our Education Foundation 

    Co-Curricular Activities
     
    • Students are able to select from a variety of clubs and service organizations in an effort to facilitate their participation and volunteerism in both the school and the community. 
    • The Student Senate has in the past combined with the Interact Club to partner with Habitat for Humanity affiliates in an annual build on the school property toe benefit deserving families. Currently they support other initiatives to benefit the community. 
    • The District offers more than 20 varsity athletic programs for males and females.
    • The Passaic Valley Education Foundation, Inc. supports the annual "Summer Performing Arts Program" which offers opportunities to students in Grades 4-12. In addition, full musical productions are the culminating activities for the summer program.

    Passaic Valley Regional High School strives to prepare every student for the post-secondary world of academics and careers by offering a creative and multi-leveled curriculum that is consistent with New Jersey Student Learnings Standards (NJ SLS). In addition, Passaic Valley High School continues to serve as a true community center for the region's citizenry by hosting various civic, athletic, performing arts, and service activities.
