World Languages Highlights and Special Programs

The World Languages Department offers a comprehensive sequence of language courses across four different languages, along with honors options and recognition programs.

At Passaic Valley Regional High School, one can take advantage of studying American Sign Language, French, Italian, and/or Spanish.  The following courses are offered:

Students can further embrace their language by joining the French, Italian, or Spanish Club. Students will experience the joy of culture through the rich food, vibrant music, and engaging community events! 

Honors and Recognitions
1) World Language Society: French, Italian, and Spanish Honor Societies

Students who are enrolled in a Third or Fourth level of French, Italian, or Spanish are eligible for membership in the World Language Society if they meet the following criteria:

    • The student must have attained an overall GPA of 3.5
    • The student must be an active member (attending 80% of club meetings/activities/events) in the French, Italian, or Spanish Club
    • The student must be in good standing at Passaic Valley Regional High School.

The academic criterion for eligibility is defined as students attaining a grade of no less than A- in the previous year’s final grade and an A- in the first semester of the current year. Graduation Honor Cords will be awarded to eligible seniors.


2) The New Jersey Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who achieve proficient bilingualism in English and one or more other languages. Requirements include:

    • Proficiency in English at an advanced or proficient level.
    • Proficiency in a second language at a level deemed equivalent to high school mastery
    • Completion of a sequence of World Languages coursework or an approved alternative demonstrating sustained language study.

Recognition: The Seal is affixed to the student’s high school diploma and/or transcript, signaling biliteracy to colleges, universities, and employers.

Benefits: May enhance college admission, eligibility for advanced standing or scholarships, and opportunities in career pathways requiring bilingual skills.
